Celebrating Our Pioneer Initiative Graduates

Mar 17, 2026 | Training

Eight months ago, a group of young adults from the USA, Brazil and the UK gathered at our World Horizons centre in South West Wales to begin the Pioneer Initiative, a training experience designed to stretch their faith and prepare them for cross-cultural mission. At the beginning of March, the trainees returned to Wales for their graduation, concluding a journey that shaped each of them in significant ways.

A training experience beyond the classroom

From the outset, it was clear this would not be a typical classroom course. Their first weeks combined outdoor challenges, cultural learning, spiritual formation and practical skills that pushed them well outside their comfort zones. Wales set the tone for the months ahead; practical, immersive and rooted in real world mission.

Training in practical skills

Lessons and encounters across seven countries

Their travels took them through seven countries. In England, they learned how to engage with people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. In France, they gained practical skills, supported a national gathering and strengthened their teamwork while adapting to life on the move.

Prayer in France

Bosnia and Herzegovina offered opportunities to serve a Christian camp, assist with building projects and hear stories from long term ministry workers whose perseverance was deeply inspiring. Spain brought one of the most memorable stretches of the programme as the team walked 100 miles of the Camino de Santiago, meeting pilgrims from around the world and reflecting on their own journeys while sharing faith through natural and meaningful conversations.

North Africa: faith in unfamiliar contexts

The trainees also spent time in two North African countries where they learned Arabic, helped build earthquake shelters, partnered with local workers and spent focused time in prayer. These experiences gave them a deeper understanding of ministry in unfamiliar contexts and strengthened their dependence on God.

Growing in faith, resilience and community

Beyond the miles travelled and skills learned, the greatest transformation happened internally. These young adults learned to trust God in uncertainty, listen for His leading and serve with humility and courage. They formed strong friendships across cultures and discovered resilience and faithfulness they did not know they had.

When they returned to South West Wales in March for their graduation, they came back as people who had grown through experience and community and who were prepared for the next steps God is calling them to take.

David’s story: when God rewrote my plans

When I arrived at the World Horizons centre in South West Wales eight months ago, I had zero intention of going overseas for the gospel. Long term mission work wasn’t even on my radar. I still remember walking along the seafront in Llanelli with the team, chatting to...

A lasting impact

This summer, I had the privilege of spending a month, on the World Horizons Impact programme. I grew a lot through it, developing in gifting and leadership skills as part of the team. What struck me as I reflected on the month was how varied and practical the training...
